Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31st. It originated with the ancient celtic festival of samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghost.
The evening before was known as all hallows eve and later halloween.
The celts who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdon and Northern Ireland, France, believed that dead returned to earth on Samhain.
Wearing Halloween costumes and trick or treating are the most popular American Halloween traditions. Since the 1800s, when Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their Halloween festivities to North America the holiday has evolved considerably.
